Chan Master Facong of Tianyi in Yuezhou was a native of Gaoyou. Ascending the hall, he said, 'In the secluded room a cold lamp requires no picking; / In the empty sky the bright moon penetrates the clouds. / If you want to know what is constant without interruption in daily use: / Amidst blazing flames an extraordinary sprout shoots forth.' Once, on the occasion of opening the light (consecrating) a statue of the Mahāsattva Samantabhadra, the master climbed the ladder, held the brush, and looked around at the great assembly, saying, 'If you can speak, I will lower the brush.' The assembly had no reply. The master called to his attendant, 'Hold the ladder firmly for this old monk!' and thereupon dotted the eyes.
