17.23

遂寧府香山尼佛通禪師。因誦蓮經有省。往見石門。乃曰。成都喫不得也。遂寧喫不得也。門拈拄杖打出通忽悟曰。榮者自榮。謝者自謝。秋露春風好不著便。門拂袖歸方丈。師亦不顧而出。由此道俗景從得法者眾。

The nun Chan Master Fotong of Xiangshan in Suining Superior Prefecture had an awakening through reciting the Lotus Sūtra. She went to see Shimen, who then said, 'You cannot eat in Chengdu; you cannot eat in Suining.' Shimen picked up his staff and drove her out with blows. Fotong suddenly awakened and said, 'What flourishes naturally flourishes; what withers naturally withers. Autumn dew and spring wind—it does not matter at all.' Shimen flicked his sleeves and returned to the abbot's quarters. The master also left without looking back. From this, monastics and laypeople followed her like shadows, and those who attained the Dharma were numerous.
