17.30

潭州東明仁仙禪師。開堂日僧問。世尊出世梵王前引帝釋後隨。和尚出世有何祥瑞。師曰。任是百千諸佛一時趕向水牯欄裏。曰有何祥瑞。師曰。山僧不曾眼花。

Chan Master Renxian of Dongming in Tanzhou. On the day he opened the hall, a monk asked, "When the Bhagavat appeared in the world, King Brahmā led the way in front and Śakra followed behind. When the Upādhyāya appears in the world, what auspicious omen is there?" The master said, "Even if it were a hundred thousand Buddhas, drive them all at once into the water buffalo pen." [The monk] asked, "What auspicious omen is there?" The master said, "The mountain monk's eyes have never been blurred."
