17.31

泗州普照曉欽明悟禪師。僧問。師唱誰家曲宗風嗣阿誰。師曰。東邊更近東。曰溈山的子智海親孫也。師曰。却笑傍人把釣竿。上堂。引手撮空展轉莫及。翻身擲影徒自勞形。當面拈來却成蹉過。畢竟如何。拍禪床曰咱合錯商量。

Chan Master Xiaoqin Mingwu of Puzhao in Sizhou. A monk asked, "Whose song does the master sing? Whose lineage style do you inherit?" The master said, "The eastern side is even closer to the east." [The monk] said, "The true child of Guishan, the direct grandchild of Zhihai." The master said, "Yet laughing at the bystander holding a fishing rod." Ascending the hall, [the master said], "Reaching out a hand to grasp emptiness, turning and tossing, it cannot be caught; turning the body to cast a shadow, in vain one exhausts the form. Brought right before your face, yet it turns into a missed encounter. In the end, how is it?" He slapped the meditation bench and said, "We have agreed on a mistaken consultation."
