Chan Master Runeng of Daowu in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The master said, "When slandered, not angry." The monk said, "What is the Dharma?" The master said, "When praised, not pleased." The monk said, "What is the Saṅgha?" The master said, "Shaving off the beard and hair." He then said, "'Turning the wheel of Dharma thrice in the great chiliocosm, / That wheel has always been inherently pure.' / Vipaśyin Buddha paid attention early on, / But right up to the present has not attained the wondrousness. Why is it so? 'The purity of the all-inclusive wisdom of all wisdoms'—do you understand yet? Playing the zither to a donkey does not enter a cow's ears." Soon after, he moved to Mount Dagui. In less than two months, he bathed, shaved his head, sat cross-legged, and passed away.
