Chan Master Qian of Dongming in Tanzhou served Zhenru in his early years, and in his later years resided at the Zhenru Hermitage on Mount Guishan. Daozhe Zhong held his style in high regard and often questioned him. One day, while [the master] was reading the Śūraṅgama, Zhong asked, "'As I press my finger, the ocean-seal emits light'—what was the Buddha's meaning?" The master said, "Old Śākya deserves twenty blows of the stick." [Zhong] asked, "Why is it so?" The master said, "What was the use of pressing the finger?" [Zhong] asked, "'When you momentarily give rise to a thought, defilements arise first'—what about that?" The master said, "That too is the ocean-seal emitting light."
