18.18

嘉定府月珠神鑑禪師。僧請筆師語要。師曰。達磨西來單傳心印。曹溪六祖不識一字。今日諸方出世語句如山重增繩索。乃拍禪床曰。於斯薦得猶是鈍根。若也未然。白雲深處從君臥。切忌寒猿中夜啼。

Chan Master Shenjian of Yuezhu in Jiading Prefecture. A monk requested to record in writing the essentials of the Master's words. The Master said, "Bodhidharma came from the West, solely transmitting the mind seal; the Sixth Patriarch of Caoxi did not know a single word. Today, the sayings of those appearing in the world across the various quarters are like mountains, multiplying ropes and chains all the more." He then slapped the meditation bench and said, "If you understand at this, you are still of dull faculties. If not yet so: lie as you please deep within the white clouds, but take special care regarding the cold apes crying at midnight."
