Chan Master Huaishen Cishou of Huilin in the Eastern Capital was a native of Shouchun Prefecture, surnamed Xia. When he was born, an auspicious light appeared at the house; Chan Master Wenshu Jian saw it from afar and suspected it was a fire. Upon inquiring the next morning, he learned the master had just been born and went to visit him. As soon as the master saw Jian, he laughed. His mother permitted him to leave household life, and at fourteen, cutting off family attachments, he was tonsured. Four years later, he sought the Way beyond the mundane sphere, relying on Jingzhao at Zisheng in Jiahe. Zhao brought up the nidāna of Liangsui visiting Magu and asked, "What is Liangsui's place of knowing?" The master was immediately thoroughly enlightened. When he went forth to dwell at Zifu, shoes filled the outside of his door. Chan Master Fogjian Qin of Jiangshan arrived on a preaching tour. After tea, the master led him to inspect the quarters, reaching the Thousand-Person Ward. Qin asked, "Since it is the Thousand-Person Ward, why is there only one person?" The master said, "Much emptiness is not as good as a little reality." Qin said, "Is that so?" The master flushed with shame. It happened that the court turned Zifu into a Shenxiao Palace; therefore he abandoned it and went to Jiangshan, staying at the Western Hermitage to repeatedly request instruction. Qin said, "If Zifu knows it is this sort of affair, then stop." The master said, "I am truly not yet settled; I hope the Venerable will not treat me as an outsider." Qin brought up the topic of Qiannü's soul departing, probing it back and forth; the master greatly resolved his doubts and presented a verse saying: 'It is merely where I used to walk; / Casual mention of it brings confusion. / Last night a gust of wild wind arose; / Who knows how many peach blossoms were blown down?' Qin tapped the table and said, "Isn't this the living meaning of the Patriarchs?" Before long, an imperial order appointed him to dwell at Jiao Mountain. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The master said, "A yellow face is not real gold leaf." The monk asked, "What is the affair beyond the Buddha?" The master said, "One arrow, one lotus flower." The monk bowed. The master snapped his fingers three times. The monk asked, "How is it when one knows it is there but cannot speak it?" The master said, "A mute eating honey." The monk asked, "How is it when one can speak it but does not know it is there?" The master said, "A parrot calling people." The monk bowed. The master scolded, "This message-bearing fellow!" The monk asked, "What kind of person is not swallowed by impermanence?" The master said, "I only fear it has no place to bite into." The monk said, "If so, then a single thought penetrates the profound arrow, and the Three Corpse ghosts lose their deceit." The master said, "If you have a single thought, you will certainly be swallowed by it." The monk asked, "How is it when there is no single thought?" The master said, "Captured, Ācārya!" Ascending the hall, [the master said:] "An ancient said: 'Patience, patience! The Tathāgatas of the three times end from this. Forbearance, forbearance! Ten thousand disasters and a thousand calamities melt away from this. Silence, silence! Unsurpassed bodhi is attained from this.'" The master said, "Once you comprehend these three phrases, what an unhappy fellow! This mountain monk merely gets a cow from someone and returns a horse, splashing water and spitting at one another, interrupting and cursing each other." Striking his staff, he said, "All come out evenly! All come out evenly!" Ascending the hall: "From which mountain do clouds arise? / From which ravine is wind born? / A fine place of entry; / On the official road, few people walk." Ascending the hall: "It is not the environment, nor is it the mind; / Even calling it Buddha causes it to sink away. / Within this there are originally no gradations; / Take care not to seek where there are no gradations. / If you do not seek at all, the fault is even deeper; / Break open the rice bag of Yunmen, / Only then do you know red earth is yellow gold. Du!"
