18.40

平江府萬壽如璝證悟禪師。建寧魏氏。開堂日僧問。如何是蘇臺境。師曰。山橫師子秀水接太湖清。曰如何是境中人。師曰。衣冠皇宋後禮樂大周前。師凡見僧必問。近日如何。僧擬對。即拊其背曰。不可思議。將示寂眾集。復曰。不可思議。乃合掌而終。

Chan Master Rugui Zhengwu of Wanshou in Pingjiang Prefecture was of the Wei family of Jianning. On the day of opening the hall, a monk asked, "What is the environment of Sutai?" The master said, "The mountain lies horizontally, the lion is elegant; the waters join, Lake Tai is clear." The monk asked, "Who is the person within the environment?" The master said, "Robes and caps after the August Song; rites and music before the Great Zhou." Whenever the master saw a monk, he would certainly ask, "How is it recently?" As the monk prepared to reply, the master would slap his back and say, "Inconceivable!" When he was about to manifest passing into extinction, the assembly gathered; he said again, "Inconceivable!" Then, joining his palms, he passed away.
