Chan Master Luohan Qin of Mount Lu ascended the hall and said, "Luohan has a phrase: deliberating makes it an open proclamation. Take responsibility for it right here and now, and go back to the hall to drink tea." He also ascended the hall and said, "When the moon is on its first day, the Tathāgatas of the three times cannot leap out. When the moon is on its second day, it is distinctly clear right here and now—cease all deliberation. When the moon is on its third day, the biting, frosty wind penetrates bone-deep with cold." He then took up his staff and said, "The past of this mountain monk's staff cannot be attained; its present cannot be attained. Everyone, how do you understand this? If you can distinguish it here, you are entirely free to stride forth in all directions; if not yet so, beware of running about haphazardly." Striking the meditation couch, he stepped down from his seat.
