18.7

泉州慧明雲禪師。僧問。般若海中如何為人。師曰。雲開銀漢逈。僧云。畢竟又如何。師曰。棒頭見血。問毘婆尸佛早留心直至如今不得妙意旨如何。師曰。醜拙不堪當。僧云。忽然當又作麼生。師曰。半錢也不直。僧云。如何即是。師曰。趙州南石橋北。僧禮拜。師擊禪床三下。上堂曰。少室遺風曹溪要旨。黃蘗收來臨濟扶起。三關戈甲競頭分。四揀開遮何止此。定宗乘立綱紀。當機驗取廬陵米。更從升合定高低。爭似備師封白紙。象骨提心暗喜。同風今古播叢林。切忌叩牙驚著齒。又曰。雪峯鼈鼻。溈山水牯。臨濟三關。雲門一普。勸君一一透將來。捉取大雄山下虎。

Chan Master Yun of Huiming in Quanzhou. A monk asked, "How do you guide people within the ocean of prajñā?" The master said, "Clouds disperse, and the Silver River is distant." The monk said, "In the end, what then?" The master said, "Blood is seen at the tip of the stick." A monk asked, "Vipaśyin Buddha paid attention long ago, yet up until now has not attained wondrousness. What is the meaning?" The master said, "Ugly and clumsy, intolerable." The monk said, "If all of a sudden one bears it, what then?" The master said, "Not worth even half a penny." The monk said, "What is right?" The master said, "South of Zhaozhou, north of the stone bridge." The monk bowed. The master struck the meditation seat three times. Ascending the hall, he said, "The bequeathed style of Shaoshi, the essential tenets of Caoxi: gathered by Huangbo, raised up by Linji. Weapons and armor of the three checkpoints vie to be divided; the four selections opening and shutting, how could it stop at this? Establish the lineage school, set up the governing principles! Right in the face of the matter, verify the rice of Luling. Rather than determining high and low by pecks and pints, how can it compare to Master Bei sealing the blank paper? Xianggu raised his mind, rejoicing in secret; the shared wind from past to present spreads through the monasteries. Above all, do not tap the jaws and startle the teeth!" He also said, "Xuefeng's turtle-nosed snake; Guishan's water buffalo; Linji's three checkpoints; Yunmen's one pu. I urge you all to penetrate each and every one, and capture the tiger beneath Mount Daxiong."
