Chan Master You'en of Yangshan in Yuanzhou ascended the hall. Striking the meditation seat once with his staff, he said, "Buddha's commands and patriarchs' orders dissolve like tiles shattering and ice melting. Half-words and full words: thousands of mountains and tens of thousands of rivers. Before patch-robed monks, the grass bends and the wind sweeps. Even though it is so, 'the authorities allow not a needle, but privately carriages and horses pass through.' I have a remarkable nidāna to bring forth to the assembly." After a long while, he said, "Bodhidharma vainly wall-gazed for nine years; returning to the West, he was ashamed to face the people of Luoyang." He also said, "Where mists and clouds part, the sun and moon shine together. Reflections fall upon a thousand rivers; light encompasses all phenomena. Each and every one shines forth clearly—none is not one's own house style. Every single thing is fully manifest—all is the Patriarch's lively livelihood. If you understand here, you nod your head and swallow your saliva. If you do not understand here, for now swing your arms and shake your head. Speaking like this is much like acting as if no one were around. If someone steps forth and gives a cough, this mountain monk will step back three paces."
