19.18

臨安府上天竺從諫慈辯講師。處之松陽人也。具大知見聲播講席。於止觀深有所契。每與禪衲遊。嘗以道力扣大通。通一日作書寄之。師發緘覩黑白二圓相乃悟。答偈曰。黑相白相擔枷過狀。了不了兮無風起浪。若問究竟事如何。洞庭山在太湖上。

Lecturer Congjian Cibian of Shang Tianzhu in Lin'an Prefecture was a native of Songyang in Chuzhou. Possessing great insight, his fame spread through the lecture seats. He had a deep realization of cessation and contemplation (śamatha-vipaśyanā). He frequently associated with Chan patch-robed monks, and once used his power of the Way to interrogate Datong. One day, Datong wrote a letter and sent it to him. The Master broke the seal and saw two circular figures, one black and one white, whereupon he was awakened. He replied with a verse: / 'Black figure, white figure: carrying the cangue and passing the deposition; / Clear or not clear—raising waves where there is no wind. / If you ask what the ultimate matter is like: / Mount Dongting is upon Lake Tai.'
