19.17

西京韶山雲門道信禪師。僧問。如何是祖師西來意。師曰。千年古墓蛇今日頭生角。曰莫便是和尚家風也無。師曰。卜度則喪身失命。問如何是學人自己。師曰。無人識者。曰如何得脫灑去。師曰。爾問我答。

Chan Master Daoxin of Yunmen at Shaoshan in the Western Capital. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "A snake in a thousand-year-old tomb today grows horns on its head." The monk said, "Could it be simply the Upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "To calculate is to lose body and life." The monk asked, "What is the student's own self?" The Master said, "No one recognizes it." The monk said, "How can one attain liberation and release?" The Master said, "You ask, and I answer."
