19.30

吉州禾山用安禪師。僧問。蓮花未出水時如何。師曰。魚挨鼈倚。曰出水後如何。師曰。水仙頭上戴好手絕躋攀。曰出與未出時如何。師曰。應是乾坤惜不教容易看。

Chan Master Yong'an of Heshan in Jizhou. A monk asked, "What is it like when the lotus flower has not yet emerged from the water?" The Master said, "Fish push against it and turtles lean on it." The monk said, "What about after it emerges from the water?" The Master said, "Worn upon the water immortal's head, even skilled hands cannot climb up to it." The monk said, "What about when it is neither emerged nor not emerged?" The Master said, "Heaven and earth must cherish it, not letting it be easily seen."
