Chan Master Shengyin Chongkai of Chuzhou. A monk asked: "When bodhisattvas see nature, it is like seeing the sun by day. When śrāvakas see nature, it is like seeing the moon by night. I wonder, what is the Upādhyāya's seeing of nature like?" The Master said: "Crossed out with a single stroke of the brush." [The monk] asked: "I wonder, what is the meaning of this?" The Master said: "For ten thousand miles, no clouds; a thousand peaks stand like walls." The monk said: "Thank you, Master, for the instruction." The Master said: "Wrong." He asked: "Whose family's melody does the Master sing? Whose lineage style do you inherit?" The Master said: "Clouds spread over the northern palace; the moon imprints on the southern sea." The monk said: "In that case, you are a true son of Foguo." The Master said: "Discarding the weeds, five trillion." He then said: "The Patriarch's correct command is fully brought forth throughout past and present. It covers heaven and earth, holding fast the world, directly causing the wheel of heaven to turn left and the axle of the earth to revolve right. The night moon streams its light; the morning sun shines in radiance. The four directions shine brilliantly, and the eight vistas expand broadly. Not a single fraction is concealed; not a speck of dust is left out. The mountains are green, the waters blue, the crane white, the crow black. Mist rises from the suburban marshes, a dragon roars beside the city walls. Wind stirs outside the railing, a tiger roars before the pavilion. The wooden youth crashes through the secluded barrier; the stone maiden breaks open the golden lock. Crashing through the armor of the three mysteries, scattering the spears and banners of the five ranks. The bow of Shigong and the fork of Mimo must be laid down straightaway; Deshan's stick and Linji's shout need not be displayed. Why hit the drum to carry mud? There is no need to roll the ball or haul rocks. The principles within are completely exhausted, without any handle at all. When inspected, it is truly not yet there. Since it is like this, tell me: what is the matter of transcending the lineage and surpassing standard forms?" After a long pause, he said: "The great earth cannot bear it up; heaven and earth find it hard to hide."
