2.61

益州菩提桂芳禪師。僧問。諸佛出世。梵王前引帝釋後隨。和尚出世有何祥瑞。師曰。三春物象妍。僧云。學人未曉。師曰。溪花紅似錦。岸柳綠如藍。僧云。便恁麼去時如何。師曰。未曾騎竹馬。切忌跨金龍。

Chan Master Guihang of Bodhi in Yizhou. A monk asked, 'When the buddhas appear in the world, King Brahmā leads before and Śakra follows behind. When the upādhyāya appears in the world, what auspicious sign is there?' The Master said, 'The sights of the three months of spring are exquisite.' The monk said, 'I do not understand.' The Master said, 'The stream blossoms are red as brocade; the shore willows are green as indigo.' The monk said, 'How is it when one goes along just like that?' The Master said, 'If you have never ridden a hobbyhorse, be sure never to straddle a golden dragon.'
