瑞州九峯勤禪師。僧問。方便門中請師垂示。師曰。佛不奪眾生願。曰恁麼則謝師方便。師曰。却須喫棒。上堂曰。羅舌沸千喚萬喚。露柱因甚麼不回頭。良久曰。美食不中飽人喫。便下座。

Chan Master Qin of Jiufeng in Ruizhou. A monk asked, "Within the gate of expedient means, I ask the master to give instruction." The Master said, "The Buddha does not deprive sentient beings of their vows." [The monk] said, "If so, then thank you, Master, for the expedient means." The Master said, "You must still take a blow of the stick." Ascending the hall, he said, "The spread tongues seethe with a thousand calls and ten thousand summonses. Why does the exposed pillar not turn its head?" After a long silence, he said, "Delicious food is not fit for a sated person to eat." Then he stepped down from the seat.
