Emperor Zhezong dispatched an envoy to present incense. The Master ascended the seat, and after the questions and answers were concluded, he picked up his whisk, addressed the assembly, and said: "Do you still see? The whisk in my hand, layer upon layer, radiates a hundred kinds of precious light for you all." He struck the meditation bench again and said: "Do you still hear? The lion throne beneath my seat, phrase by phrase, expounds the definitive meaning of the One Vehicle for you all. If you awaken here, then through vast eons your karmic consciousness of self and others will instantly vanish like smoke and fly away like ashes. The present body, world, faculties, objects, and afflictions will thoroughly melt like ice and dissolve like snow. Then you will see the treasury of the true Dharma eye of Gṛdhrakūṭa radiantly filling the eyes, fully manifest; the wondrous mind of nirvāṇa of Shaoshi brilliantly shining, alone revealed across the entire body. It is like Yajñadatta realizing the face in the mirror was originally just his own head; it is also like the strongman finding the round pearl on his forehead, which in the end was not obtained from another. If it is like this, then immeasurable supernormal powers and samādhis are originally and completely perfected in every dust mote; the Dharma gates of the buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges are all simultaneously complete in every thought. Good people, if one can grasp it in this way, one may be said to immediately realize the unarisen without waiting for countless eons to accomplish perfect awakening. Now, do you wish to see the unarisen?" After a long pause, he said: "The two breaths do not speak, yet they contain forms; where can the myriad spirits express gratitude for impartiality?" In the third year of the Yuanfu era, Emperor Zhezong passed away. On the hundredth day, the Master was summoned to the palace and granted the name Chan Master Foyin. In the second month of the following year, the Empress Dowager passed away. On the thirty-fifth day, by imperial decree he expounded the Dharma at the Cide Hall. Ascending the seat, after the questions and answers were concluded, he said: "Just now Chan Master Jingyin said: 'On this day, six Chan elders are simultaneously summoned to ascend the seat.' (Jingyin was Chan Master Weiyue of Fori, who came from the Yunmen lineage.) 'The one who speaks the Dharma first does not know the final phrase; the one who speaks the Dharma last does not know the initial phrase.' Your servant monk now happens to speak the Dharma last, yet in reverent service to the Greatly Virtuous Late Empress Dowager, I expound the initial phrase. Do you know it? The spiritual source is serene and silent; matter and self are both thus. The Buddha-nature is true and actual; the holy and ordinary share the same substance. It encompasses a thousand antiquities and opens through the ten directions of emptiness. Originally devoid of coming and going, how could there ever be arising and ceasing? Today, humans and devas mingle; the hidden and the manifest universally assemble. The imperial breeze blows gently, harmonizing with spring; the sovereign sun moves slowly, nurturing all things. The Lord of Ten Thousand Chariots now ascends the hall of Shun; the six Chan masters together look up to the sky of Yao. In reverent service to the Greatly Virtuous Late Empress Dowager, we have established this Dharma banquet, pointing to the ancient Buddha-mind and opening the true Dharma eye. If you can see into this, the vermilion pavilions and jade palaces, layer upon layer, will manifest the pure Dharma-body; the golden gates and jasper ponds everywhere will reveal the original face. Only a buddha together with a buddha can co-realize and co-know this. Respectfully take care!"
