Chan Master Shouzhong of Haihui on Mount Baiyun in Shuzhou. A monk asked: "Everyone understands Yaoshan's single phrase. How is it with Baiyun today?" The Master said: "Choking empty space." The monk said: "Who knows that today the bright moon locks Shucheng?" The Master said: "Shading the brow and gazing toward Fusang." A monk asked: "A single drop from Caoxi universally moistens the great chiliocosm. How does Baiyun leaving the mountain benefit beings?" The Master said: "Clouds stretch horizontally across the cave entrance; the returning bird loses its nest." The monk said: "How about the single road to the south?" The Master said: "An iron snake blocks the great avenue, its whole body black as smoke." He instructed the assembly, saying: "Directing the four sages and commanding the six ordinary realms, uniting the three realms into a great saṅghārāma, taking the ten directions of emptiness as the gate of liberation. The mountains, rivers, and the great earth are the mind-source of the ancient buddhas; the fiery furnace and boiling cauldron are the grounds of awakening for sentient beings. Upon a single speck of dust, the whole bodies of buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges appear. Within a single Buddha-mind, the realms of boundless sentient beings appear. If one can be like this, then the mind has no knowledge: the whole mind is just the Buddha, and the whole Buddha is just the person. When person and Buddha are not different, one begins to be in the Way. Even though it is like this, how do you say a phrase that does not fall into pedagogical means?" After a long pause, he said: "For nine years eating vegetable porridge—few people know this matter."
