Chan Master Dagui Zuchun of Tanzhou was a son of the Wu family of Fuzhou. A monk asked, 'What is the house style of Guishan?' The master said, 'Bamboo has upper and lower nodes; pine is green neither now nor anciently.' The monk said, 'I wonder what is eaten and drunk in it?' The master said, 'When hungry, dining on the Minister's jade-grain rice; when thirsty, drinking tea before the Divinely Transported Granary.' He ascended the hall: 'The Dao has no settling or disturbance; phenomena are free from seeing and knowing. When words and phrases correspond, they have no fixed meaning at all. Since antiquity, the Dragon Gate has lodged no overnight guests; down to the present day, the bird's path is devoid of tracks. If you wish to understand the exact meaning within this: in the fire, a cicada swallows a tiger. Bah!' He ascended the hall: 'When rain falls, the steps are wet; when clear and dry, water does not flow. Birds nest at the bottom of the blue ocean; fish leap atop the stone mountain. There is much deliberation among the assembly: the first two lines are ordinary, straightforward words; the last two lines are extraordinary talk outside the patterns. If you understand it in this way, you only see the pile of stones, but do not see the scattered jades. If you see the scattered jades, only then will you know that the Dao is vast and broad. Yi!'
