Chan Master Fangguang Youda of the Rear Cave on Mount Nanyue. A monk asked, 'The student has come forward and requests to meet.' The master said, 'Look behind the back of the head for the gold mallet in the sleeve.' The monk said, 'What about when breaking two into three?' The master said, 'Spare your eyebrows.' The monk then gave a shout. The master said, 'It won't do to let you off.' The monk said, 'Blind!' The master then struck him. Ascending the hall, he held up his staff and said, 'Venerable Chan practitioners! Extending an unhindered hand, snapping it off together with clouds, bringing it with snow, and holding it out before the assembly—looking at it is never enough, enjoying it leaves room to spare.' He then drew a line and said, 'Sooner or later it will scatter as heavy rain, and grasses and trees throughout the world will be nourished.' He also said, 'Departing from the four propositions, / Cutting off the hundred negations. / If it is just so, / Cease the frantic impulse. / If it is not so, / Turn around your doubts. / Apart from this, on what tenet does one rely? / West of Zhaozhou's East Hall. / Do you understand? The head wears heaven, the feet tread the earth; in the midst of daily activity, do not debate duality. Look with your eyes at the wondrous gate of the single character: you will know the flavor of Zhenzhou's radishes.' He gave a shout.
