Chan Master Wenyan of Fuyan on Mount Nanyue. A monk asked, 'What is the Buddha?'
The master spat right in his face. He then said: 'Spitting right in the face—be sure not to miss it! In the secluded valley monkeys howl; in the tall grove magpies chatter. In the clamour of the bustling market, they measure each other's heads to buy caps. Returning together in broad daylight, who knows how many there are?'
He also said: 'Sun-faced Buddha, Moon-faced Buddha. Since parting with Master Ma, years have gone by. Who can tell who has the bronze head and iron forehead? Baizhang's deafness was not being buried away; Linji's taking blows of the stick—do not say he suffered an injustice. Sansheng's blind donkey was capable from beginning to end; what was tossed out from inside Xinghua's curtain was not an object from beneath the black dragon's chin. Those of superior capacity do not stir weapons of war; naturally a pure breeze blows gently. Those of middling and lower capacity precisely apply their minds, falling into the lair of non-arising.'
He also said: 'Wild flowers have drifted away completely at the base of the ancient city wall; / Gradually cicadas chirp at the crossing of the Xiang River. / A misty plum-rain sprinkles the high sky; / Covering the earth, the fragrant breeze fills courtyards and doors. / Thirty-three, an old ancient awl; / An elephant turning, a dragon coiling, once revealed. / As soon as it is revealed, it becomes a defilement. / I respectfully tell those who investigate the mystery: / Do not let time slip idly by.'
