Chan Master Nantai Yungong of Mount Nanyue. A monk asked, 'What is the Buddha?' The master said, 'The eyes pop out.' A monk asked, 'Are the Patriarch's intent and the teaching's intent the same or different?' The master said, 'Ānanda joins his palms; Kāśyapa raises his fist.' He then said, 'A rare meeting, hard to encounter, is precisely at this moment. Why so? Śākyamuni has already passed away, and Maitreya is not yet born.' Holding up his whisk, he said, 'Just on this day, the Buddhadharma is entirely upon this whisk. Letting go or holding fast—everything depends on the moment. When letting go, the wind blows and the grass bends, and shards of tile and rubble radiate light; Shide and Hanshan nod their heads and clap their hands. When holding fast, not a drop of water leaks through, and refined gold loses its luster; Deshan and Linji swallow their breath and hold their tongues. Just at such a moment, is letting go right, or is holding fast right?' After a long pause, he said, 'Look in another five days.'
