Chan Master Shangfang Riyi of Anji Prefecture. On the day he opened the hall, after the senior monk struck the gavel, the master said: "Before the gavel is struck, observing the one is not it. After the gavel is struck, observing the two is not right either. Arriving here, even if one has iron eyes and bronze pupils, they must be smashed into a hundred shards. Is there any patch-robed monk who does not shy away from peril and ruin? Come forward and try!" At that time, two monks came forward together. The master said: "A single arrow brings down a pair of condors." A monk said: "I have not even asked my question; why are you in such a rush?" The master said: "Could you be a monk from Silla?" The monk hesitated. The master said: "A fellow bumping into an exposed pillar!" and struck him. [A monk] asked: "What is the affair before appearing in the world?" The master said: "The frog at the bottom of the well swallows the moon." [The monk] asked: "What is the affair after appearing in the world?" The master said: "The egret snaps the withered reed branch underfoot." [The monk] asked: "Leaving these two paths aside, how does the Venerable guide people?" The master said: "A diamond drill of complete excellence—spread out on the street, to whom can it be sold?" [A monk] asked: "What is the aged water buffalo?" The master said: "Sparse teeth, dim eyes." [A monk] asked: "What happens when meeting in a bustling marketplace?" The master said: "Going east, buy cheap; going west, buy dear." [The monk] said: "What if one makes it neither dear nor cheap?" The master said: "The radishes of Zhenzhou." [A monk] asked: "All sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature. Since they have the Buddha-nature, why do they bump into donkeys' wombs and horses' bellies?" The master said: "Knowing full well, yet deliberately transgressing." [The monk] said: "Where should they repent and reform?" The master struck him and said: "Just treat it as doctoring a dead horse." [A monk] asked: "How is it when meeting face to face?" The master said: "The left eye weighs half a pound; the right eye weighs eight ounces." The monk held up his sitting cloth and said: "What about this?" The master said: "Do not trouble to bring it out." Thereupon looking left and right, he said: "The Yellow-faced Old Man walked seven steps around—right beneath his heels was the perfect place for an awl! The Blue-eyed Barbarian sat stiffly for nine years—what a pity not to have thrust a needle into the crown of his head! Had there been a patch-robed monk at that time who spared no effort for the sake of the assembly and administered this poisonous hand, it would have saved twirling a flower and smiling, vainly cracking a grin; it would have saved standing in the snow up to the waist, turning into rutted tracks. From this point on, they compounded error upon error and colluded with one another, so that there came to be the fragrance of the five petals and the thousand lamps continuing the flame; upon curved wooden chairs they sang two and made three, and at the tip of the hazel staff they pointed south to mean north. This has led right up to folks who advance and retreat asking about Dharma and asking about mind, fellows leaning on doors and clinging to walls seeking the Buddha and seeking the Patriarchs. Pointing to the cypress tree in the courtyard, they call it the Patriarch's meaning in coming from the West; gazing at the mountain in the sunlight, they further mistake it for the student's own self. Little do they know that this one great matter is originally luminous and clear, never interrupted throughout the bounds of the future. It does not rely on cultivation and realization; how could it depend on conceptual thought? Even Śāriputra had that which he did not know; it is not something Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra could debate. Have you not seen: with one shout from Mazu, Baizhang was deaf for three days; when Baoshou exercised authority, the whole town of Zhenzhou went blind. Great capacity and great function are like swift thunder that cannot be stopped; a single chant and a single discourse are like a sheer cliff that cannot be trodden. Just at such a moment, the Buddhas of the three periods can only stand by and watch; the six generations of Patriarchs have their share of bearing witness. Assembly, tell me: is there anyone today who bears witness?" After a long pause, he said: "Pierced!" Ascending the hall: "Shide gathers firewood, Hanshan lights the fire; only Fenggan sits coldly in the rock cave. Tell me, what special virtue does Fenggan have?" After a long pause, he said: "Without servants at home, one cannot make a gentleman."
