21.7

隆興府景福日餘禪師。僧問。如何是道。師曰。天共白雲曉。水和明月流。曰如何是道中人。師曰。先行不到末後太過。又僧出眾畫一圓相。師以手畫一畫。僧作舞歸眾。師曰。家有白澤之圖必無如是妖怪。乃拈拄杖曰。無量諸佛向此轉大法輪。今古祖師向此演大法義。若信得及。法法本自圓成。念念悉皆具足。若信不及。山僧今日因行不妨掉臂。更為重說偈言。卓一下下座。

Chan Master Jingfu Riyu of Longxing Prefecture. A monk asked: "What is the Way?" The master said: "Heaven joins the white clouds at dawn; water flows together with the bright moon." [The monk] asked: "What is the person of the Way?" The master said: "Going ahead, one does not arrive; falling behind, one goes too far." Another monk came out from the assembly and drew a circle. The master drew a line with his hand. The monk danced and returned to the assembly. The master said: "Where the house has a drawing of Baize, there are surely no such monsters." Thereupon, holding up his staff, he said: "Countless Buddhas turn the great Dharma wheel upon this; Patriarchs of past and present expound the great Dharma meaning upon this. If you can trust completely, phenomenon by phenomenon is originally complete and perfect; thought by thought is fully endowed. If you cannot trust, this mountain monk today, having made the journey, might as well swing his arms and speak verse once more for your sake." Striking once, he stepped down from the seat.
