Chan Master Jichang of Sansheng in Hanzhou was a son of the Li family of Pengzhou. He ascended the hall [and said]: 'A wooden Buddha does not endure fire; before the Sweet Dew Platform one meets Bodhidharma. Sorrowful that the man of Luoyang has not yet come, he sat in vain in the cold, wall-gazing for nine years. A golden Buddha does not endure the furnace; sitting and sighing over this toilsome life running upon the road. If one does not look upon the painting of Mount Hua, how could one know Pan Lang rides the donkey backwards? A clay Buddha does not endure water; a single ray of spiritual light illuminates heaven and earth. How admirable is old Xuansha, that sharp awl! He did not want the South Mountain, he wanted the turtle-nosed viper.' Ascending the hall, he cited Zhaozhou visiting the two hermitage masters. The Master said: 'The scions of the Five Tombs vie in boasting of their wealth; the venerable monk in hundred-patch robes does not detest his poverty. In recent times worldly conventions are mostly upside down: they only esteem the clothing, not the person.'
