Chan Master Benquan of Baofu in Zhangzhou was a native of Linzhang. By nature he was straightforward and zealous for the Way. Where Huitang raised his fist, he thoroughly verified the source of roots; his dynamic wit issued swiftly. When Huang Shangu first had an entry, he asked Huitang: 'Who here can be spoken with?' Huitang said: 'Master Quan of Zhangzhou is just now supervising the laborers clearing fields.' Shangu went with Huitang and posed a question: 'Does the estate steward know that the exposed pillar has given birth to a child?' The Master said: 'Is it male or female?' Huang hesitated; the Master brushed him off. Huitang said to [the Master]: 'Do not be rude.' The Master said: 'If I don't beat this piece of wood, what time should I wait for?' Huang laughed loudly. Ascending the hall, he cited Hanshan's verse: 'My mind is like the autumn moon, / purely white and bright in the emerald pool. / Nothing can compare with it; / tell me, how can I describe it?' [The Master said:] 'This old monk is not so: / My mind is like a lantern: / lit with fire, inside and outside are red. / There is something that can compare with it: / tomorrow morning the sun rises in the east.' Those who transmitted this took it as a joke. When Upādhyāya Sixin saw it, he sighed and said: 'Brother Quan's instructional discourse is like this—truly he has not betrayed what our late master entrusted to him!'
