Chan Master Xiaojin of the Shuilu Cloister on Guishan in Sizhou was a native of Fuzhou. A monk asked: 'What is the guest within the guest?' The Master said: 'Chaofu lets his oxen drink.' [The monk] asked: 'What is the host within the guest?' The Master said: 'Xuyou washes his ears.' [The monk] asked: 'What is the guest within the host?' The Master gave a shout. [The monk] asked: 'What is the host within the host?' The Master said: 'Having bowed, step back.' Ascending the hall: 'When the ground is secure and close, offenses fill the sky: truly one cannot lift a foot. When supernatural playfulness occurs, one hurts oneself without a wound: exceptionally, one cannot set down a foot. Now tell me, where does the fault lie? Let those with eyes for investigation come forth to discuss it together. If you wish to see your original homeland, do not branch off into divergent roads. Do not merely nod to yourself and let the seasons slip by. On another day a hammer blow will strike your crown—do not say you were not told.'
