Chan Master An of Taiping in Yongzhou ascended the hall: "Whether profitable or unprofitable, do not leave the marketplace. The radishes of Zhenzhou are extremely dear; the rice price of Luling is very cheap. How can they compare to this place in Taiping? The season is bountiful, the times peaceful, and merchants gather in crowds. White rice is four coins per sheng; radishes are one coin per bundle. There is no need to buy cheap at the north end and sell dear at the west end. Naturally, things reach the four kinds of beings; naturally, benefits assist the royal governance. How then should one speak of the principle of the Buddha's Dharma?" After a long pause, he said, "'I advise you, no need to carve unyielding stone; / The mouths of passers-by on the road are like stele-inscriptions.'"
