Chan Master Jinying of Baoci in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "I do not ask about trekking over the long road; what is the matter of the one phrase upon arriving home?" The master said, "Snow fills the vast sky." The monk said, "This is still what people of the time know; what is the path of turning the body?" The master gave a shout. Ascending the hall: "Baoci has a gong'an that has not yet been settled anywhere. Happily meeting the new day, I bring it out: I ask each of you to open your eyes high and look." He then kicked off a single shoe and said, "Do you know this message? When Bodhidharma returned to the West, he carried it beside him." Ascending the hall: "Coming up like this is a fierce tiger emerging from the forest; going down like this is a startled snake entering the grass. Neither up nor down, the sun-disc shines bright and clear." Giving a shout, he said, "The waters of the Xiao and Xiang rivers are emerald and flowing; stepping out the gate, there is the road to Chang'an." Ascending the hall, he threw down his staff, then called out to the great assembly, saying, "The staff has swallowed up the Patriarchs! Whom will you have preach Chan? Is there still anyone who can save them?" He gave a shout. Ascending the hall, he suddenly held up his staff and said, "All the Buddhas of the three periods of time / Enter this nest together. / Patch-robed monks call it a falcon soaring in the distant sky." He struck his staff once.
