Chan Master Xiguang of Jiufeng in Ruizhou. While on itinerant pilgrimage, he visited Upādhyāya Zhi of Y蓋 (Yungai). He then asked, "What was the meaning of Xinghua striking Kebin?" Zhi stepped down from the meditation couch, spread both hands, stuck out his tongue, and showed it to him. The master struck the ground once with his sitting mat. Zhi said, "This is turned by the power of wind." He also asked Chan Master Lin of Shishuang. Lin said, "What is your understanding?" The master also struck once with his sitting mat. Lin said, "It is a fine strike of the sitting mat, but you simply do not know where it lands." He also asked Zhenjing. Jing said, "What is your understanding?" The master again struck once with his sitting mat. Jing said, "He strikes, and you strike too." The master was greatly awakened at these words. Zhenjing thereupon composed a gāthā: 'A great man when he should sever does not sever himself; / Xinghua was a thoroughgoing fellow for people's sake. / From then on, let his eyes open on their own: / After striking him with the stick, fined him money and drove him out of the monastery.' Later he resided at Jiufeng, where patch-robed monks revered him as their lineage model.
