Chan Master Jixing Huiquan of Jiuding in Jiading Prefecture was a son of the Zhang family of Chengdu. A monk asked, "'When the mind is deluded, the Lotus turns it; when the mind is awakened, it turns the Lotus.' I wonder, what is the meaning of this?" The master said, "The wind is warm and birds' songs are broken up; the sun is high and flower shadows are heavy." He ascended the hall [and said], "In former days, Yunmen had three phrases: the phrase that covers heaven and earth, the phrase that cuts off all streams, and the phrase that follows the waves and pursues the billows. Jiuding today also has three phrases: the phrase of eating rice when hungry, the phrase of facing the fire when cold, and the phrase of sleeping when tired. If evaluated in terms of the Buddha Dharma, Jiuding stands directly downwind from Yunmen. If evaluated in terms of worldly truth, Yunmen stands directly downwind from Jiuding. The two statements contradict each other. So how is it that Jiuding helps people?"
