Head Monk Daolong of Zhongshan in Yanzhou was a son of the Dong family of Tonglu. He received ordination at Zhongshan Temple. Wherever he traveled during his itinerant pilgrimage, the senior patch-robed monks all praised and esteemed him. Later he reached Huanglong, where Sixin invited him to be the head monk. After Sixin passed away, he went into secluded retirement at Zhongshan. Admiring the exalted, world-transcending style of Venerable Chen, he closed his gate and engaged in no affairs, daily selling several hampers to content himself; no one recognized him. On his hand he always wore a single sock, and whenever a Chan practitioner arrived, he would hold it up to show them, saying, "This old monk has worn this sock for thirty years." A temple monk playfully asked, "What is the samādhi of non-contention?" The Master immediately slapped him.
