23.31

潭州梁山懽禪師。僧問。大眾雲臻請師開示。師曰。天靜不知雲去處。地寒留得雪多時。曰學人未曉玄言。乞師再垂方便。師曰。一重山後一重人。

Chan Master Huan of Mount Liang in Tanzhou. A monk asked, 'The great assembly has gathered like clouds; we request the Master's instruction.' The master said, 'When the sky is calm, one knows not where the clouds go; when the earth is cold, the snow is retained for a long time.' The monk said, 'Your student does not understand these mysterious words; I beg the Master to grant another expedient.' The master said, 'Beyond a layer of mountains, another layer of people.'
