Chan Master Huichang of Jingde on Mount Nanyue Yunfeng. A monk asked, "Holding high the ancestral seal is not my question; how is it when presenting it face to face?" The Master said, "Do not trouble yourself to bring it forth." The monk said, "Without the fisherman's guide, how could one see the waves?" The Master said, "Evidently." The monk said, "Speaking of it before words poses no hindrance; fully presenting it beyond things changes form." The Master said, "I allow only you, Ācārya, [to say so]." The monk said, "Stepping across beyond the three realms, who is the one sticking his head out?" The Master said, "Struggling leaves a deficit; yielding leaves a surplus." The monk said, "This student cannot distinguish east from west, nor tell north from south." The Master said, "You are giving rise to withdrawal and hesitation yourself." He then said, "The flowing waters of Yu Brook are as if dyed indigo; / The cloud-dense peaks and ranges cannot be painted. / Mountain colours and water sounds are entirely the substance; / Who understands how to awaken to the unborn? / Awakening to the unborn, one spontaneously forgets sentiment toward both this and that; / If you further intend to seek wonder and subtlety, / You would laugh Huineng of Lingnan to death." He also said, "Neither is it wrong, nor is it right. Bodhidharma's coming from the West deluded the multitude and displayed aberrations; after the King of Liang saw through him, he crossed the river into Wei. Facing the hills of Song for nine years of wall-gazing, when he took in Shenguang, he turned around and suffered a loss. Assembly, do you wish not to suffer a loss? Fine drizzling plum rains shelter a thousand houses; brisk and cool balmy breezes blow upon the ten thousand kinds. If you treat this as an analysis of the Buddha Dharma, you will fall into a pack of wild foxes." He also said, "'The Supreme Way is not difficult; it merely dislikes picking and choosing. Only without hatred and love is it thoroughly clear.' Xuefeng rolling balls, Zhaozhou's cypress in the courtyard—neither falling into seeing and hearing, nor belonging to sound and form. Intending to ask how? A slap across the cheek!" He also said, "The Buddhas and Patriarchs transmitted mind in the Western Heavens and this land. Those who attain it are like the sun and the moon, illuminating heaven and earth; those who lose it are like the blind and the deaf, unable to distinguish west from east. Here at Yunfeng, gain and loss, right and wrong, are all cast away at once. There is no Chan to investigate, no Way to study. Unrestrained and free, one steps onto the Great Square. And tell me, what did the Buddhas and Patriarchs transmit when they transmitted mind?" After a good while, he said, "The window opens: clouds and mist arise upon one's robe; / The screen is rolled up: the mountain spring enters into the mirror."
