Chan Master Dexuan of Fushan in Shuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Heaven is enduring and earth is everlasting." The monk said, "This student does not understand." The Master said, "Old age brings sickness." The monk said, "What about dying together and being born together?" The Master said, "Would it do to call you, Ācārya, the Buddha?" He then said, "Twin Well Peak and Brocade Valley: / South, north, east, and west are hard to depict in a map. / Even with the skilful brush of Zhang Sengyou, / How could it equal arriving once and being satisfied in mind?" Raising his whisk, he said, "Do you see?" After a good while, he said, "Yunju Arhat." He struck the meditation bench and descended from the seat. Ascending the hall, he said, "The Buddhas did not appear in the world, yet spoke for forty-nine years; the Patriarch did not come from the West, yet Shaolin has wondrous directives. If someone recognizes the Patriarchs and Buddhas, right where they are they instantly transcend." He then raised his whisk and said, "This is Fudu's whisk. And tell me, where are the Patriarchs and Buddhas?" After a good while, he said, "Though it was a wholesome cause, it incurred an evil result."
