Chan Master Jingshan Zhaotang Liaoyi of Lin'an Prefecture was a native of Mingzhou. He ascended the hall: "Practitioners who investigate the mystery and yet cannot directly break through when encountering objects and meeting conditions do so because their karmic consciousness is heavy and deep, and their emotional delusions are tightly glued. The six gates have not ceased, and not a single place is unblocked. Spotless and purely clean, sentient beings find it hard to reach. One must enter the forest without moving the grass, and enter the water without stirring the waves; only then can one accord with birth and death and flow into the world of men. Do all of you want to understand?" Drawing a line with his staff, he said: "Grasp it right here!"
