24.18

臨安府靈隱寂室慧光禪師。錢塘夏侯氏。僧問。飛來山色示清淨法身。合㵎溪聲演廣長舌相。正當恁麼時如何是雲門一曲。師曰。芭蕉葉上三更雨。曰一句全提超佛祖。滿筵朱紫盡知音。師曰。逢人不得錯舉。上堂。不用求真何須息見。倒騎牛兮入佛殿。羌笛一聲天地空。不知誰識瞿曇面。

Chan Master Jishi Huiguang of Lingyin in Lin'an Prefecture was a son of the Xiahou clan of Qiantang. A monk asked, 'The scenery of Feilai Mountain manifests the pure Dharma-body; the sounds of the stream along the combined ravine expound the mark of the broad and long tongue. Right at such a time, what is the melody of Yunmen?' The master replied, 'Third-watch rain on plantain leaves.' The monk said, 'A single phrase fully brought forth surpasses the Buddhas and Patriarchs; the entire banquet of purple robes are all who know the tune.' The master said, 'When meeting people, you must not cite it mistakenly.' Ascending the hall, he said, 'No need to seek the real; why bother putting an end to views? Ride an ox backward and enter the Buddha hall. With a single blast of the Qiang flute, heaven and earth are void; who knows Gautama's face?'
