Chan Master Dahong Fawei of Suizhou was a native of Tiantai surnamed Bao. He ascended the hall and said, 'The Dharmakāya is without form; it cannot be sought through sound. The wondrous Way transcends words; how could it be grasped through letters? Even if one surpasses buddhas and leaps over patriarchs, one still falls into stages; even granted that one speaks of the wondrous and discusses the profound, it ultimately hangs on lips and teeth. One must achieve that where meritorious practice does not intrude and no trace remains: dry wood on a cold crag having no more moisture, illusory people and wooden horses empty of all cognitive feeling. Only then can one drop one's hands and enter the market, turning the body among different kinds. Have you not heard it said: "Unable to remain in the country of no-outflows, one returns to the misty cove to lie in the cold sand"?'
