Chan Master Daochu of Longhua in Qizhou was a son of the Ma family of Zizhou. He served as Wuzu's attendant for many years. When he resided at Longhua, he ascended the hall and said, 'When chickens see each other, they fight; when dogs see each other, they bite. The chiwen ridge-beasts atop the hall face each other all day long—why then are they not angry?' He then stepped down from the seat. The Master's sharp wits and agility were keen and swift; his disciples could not fathom his attainment. One day he said to the assembly: 'Yesterday I left the city walls; / White clouds come and go in vain. / Wind in the pines cleanses the ears and eyes; / Truly it surpasses the human realm.' He called to the assembly and said, 'This is my late master's final phrase.' A moment later, he passed away with utter detachment.
