Chan Master Qingsu of Jiuding in Jiazhou was a son of the Guo family of that prefecture. He was tonsured at Qianming Monastery and knocked on the doors of Chan throughout [the land]. In his later years he visited Wuzu, and upon hearing him bring up Shoushan's reply regarding the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West, he suddenly had an awakening. He composed a verse: 'Upside-down and topsy-turvy, topsy-turvy and upside-down, / The bride rides the donkey, the mother-in-law leads it. / Just so, it is utterly without rhyme or reason; / Looking back, I didn't realize my cloth shirt was worn through.' When Wuzu saw it, he asked, 'What about Baizhang's story of the wild fox?' The Master said, 'One who comes to speak of right and wrong is precisely the person of right and wrong.' Wuzu was greatly pleased. After a long while, [the Master] took his leave and returned, residing at Qingxi, and later moved to Jiuding. Prefect Lord Lü came to view the Great Statue and asked, 'Since it is the Great Statue, why do its shoulders bear two pillars?' The Master said, 'On a boat there are no idle hands.' Arriving at the pavilion and beholding the statue of Guanyin, [the Prefect] asked again, 'In the transformation realm of Maitreya, whence comes Guanyin?' The Master said, 'When the family is wealthy, the young child is pampered.' The prefect then bowed with reverence. The venerable elder Qin arrived. The Master asked, 'What about when the dancing sword is at the throat?' [Qin] said, 'Respectfully, may [the spirits] partake of the offering!' The Master scolded him, saying, 'Old thief, go die! You ask me!' Qin followed the previous words and asked him. The Master clasped his hands in a salute and said, 'Torn open!' On the twenty-fourth day of the fourth month in the yimao year of Shaoxing, he contracted a slight illness. He wrote a verse and left it to the assembly: 'The wooden man readies a boat; / The iron man readies a horse. / The boy Bingding steps aboard steadily; / Shouting away the white clouds, I return.' Thereupon he passed away into silence.
