25.17

法閦上座。久依五祖未有所入。一日造室。祖問。不與萬法為侶者是甚麼人。曰法閦即不然。祖以手指曰。住住法閦即不然作麼生。師於是啟悟。後至東林宣密度禪師席下。見其得平實之旨。一日拈華繞度禪床一匝。背手插香爐中曰。和尚且道。意作麼生。度屢下語皆不契。踰兩月遂問師令試說之。師曰。某秖將華插香爐中。和尚自疑有甚麼事來。

Senior Monk Fachu had long relied on Wuzu without gaining entrance. One day he went to the abbot's room. Wuzu asked, 'What kind of person is the one who does not keep company with the ten thousand dharmas?' [Fachu] said, 'For Fachu, it is not so.' Wuzu pointed his finger and said, 'Stop, stop! How is it not so for Fachu?' Thereupon the Master attained awakening. Later, he went to Donglin under the assembly of Chan Master Xuanmi Du. Seeing that [Du] had grasped the principle of the plain and solid, one day he picked up a flower, circled Master Du's meditation seat once, and with his hand behind his back inserted it into the incense burner, saying, 'Upādhyāya, tell me, what does this mean?' Master Du gave several replies, but none was fitting. More than two months later, he asked the Master to try to explain it. The Master said, 'I merely inserted a flower into the incense burner. What doubt did the Upādhyāya come to have on his own?'
