25.16

普融藏主。福州人也。至五祖入室次。祖舉倩女離魂話問之。有契。呈偈曰。二女合為一媳婦。機輪截斷難回互。從來往返絕蹤由。行人莫問來時路。凡有鄉僧來謁。則發閩音誦俚語曰。書頭教娘勤作息。書尾教娘莫瞌睡。且道中間說箇甚麼。僧擬對。師即推出。

Keeper of the Canon Purong was a native of Fuzhou. When he went to Wuzu and entered the abbot's room, Wuzu brought up the story of Qiannü's soul departing and asked him about it. He had an accord, and presented a verse: 'Two women combine into one bride; / The pivotal mechanism is cut off, hard to turn around. / From of old, coming and going have left no trace; / Traveler, do not ask about the road by which you came.' Whenever a monk from his home region came to visit, he would speak in the Min dialect and recite rustic words: 'At the start of the letter, tell mother to work diligently; / At the end of the letter, tell mother not to doze off. / Now tell me, what does it say in the middle?' When the monk was about to answer, the Master would push him out.
