Chan Master Faxun Yanzi of Nanyue was a native of Longquan in Chuzhou, from the Chen family. Ascending the hall: 'If you are a dependable fellow, your whole body is free of obstruction, your actions leave no hair's-breadth trace. Hand in hand, step out of the red dust; open up the aperture pointing upward. Plant yourself firmly in the forefront without dulling your edge; turn your grasp around and put it into play, just at the right moment. Without leaking a hair's breadth, box and lid fit together. Even if the Buddhas and patriarchs peer at it, their hair will stand on end with chills. Do you understand? Go drink tea.' A monk asked: 'What is the phrase that does not involve mist and waves?' The Master said: 'The bright moon on cold pines; the fluttering wind at the mouth of the valley.' The monk said: 'All ten thousand differences are swept away: a single phrase that cuts off the flow.' The Master said: 'Checked.' The monk said: 'Arrived.' The Master said: 'Borrowing someone else's mask to dance the Santai.' The monk asked: 'What is the Buddha?' The Master said: 'A white-foreheaded tiger.' The monk said: 'Then what about Dongshan's saying "three pounds of flax"?' The Master said: 'A venomous snake bores into the bare pillar.' The monk said: 'The student does not understand.' The Master said: 'Only when you step on it will you be startled.'
