Chan Master Chongzhe of Kaifu in Hengzhou was a native of Shaozhou, from the Liu family. Ascending the hall: 'The wondrous body, dignified and manifest, is displayed everywhere; quickly turn your head and take it upon yourself. Today, facing the assembly, it is entrusted in full; do not say that I have concealed anything.' He threw down his whisk, called the attendant, and said: 'Why did you knock down this old monk's whisk?' A monk asked: 'A single stretch of water swallows the sky from afar; the three peaks are steep and perilous. The lion seat is wiped clean once more; together we rejoice in the master's return. I wonder, upon arriving home, how do you set things up?' The Master said: 'Empty hands clench two fists.' The monk asked: 'What is the meaning?' The Master said: 'Protruding out, it is hard to discern.' Ascending the hall: 'This mountain monk has three seals, with neither addition nor subtraction or surplus. Presented directly before your face, they can transform an ordinary person into a sage. Do you all know them? If you do not yet know them, I cannot avoid explaining them repeatedly: One seal imprints on empty space: sun, moon, and stars fall to the leeward side. One seal imprints on mud: each and every thing reveals the true mechanism. One seal imprints on water: turning the head and tail of fish and dragons around. The three seals are distinct, yet their essence is one; looked at, it is neither crimson nor red. Exchanging high and low, if you do not understand, the green mountains remain as before amidst white clouds.'
