Chan Master Huisu of Wanshou in Jianning Prefecture ascended the hall. A monk asked: 'When the kalpa fire flares up and the great trichiliocosm is entirely destroyed, I wonder, is this one destroyed or not?' Dasui said it is destroyed; Mountain Master Xiu said it is not destroyed. I wonder, which is right and which is wrong?' The Master said: 'One destroyed, one not destroyed—it makes Avalokiteśvara laugh to death. A lion suddenly bites the person; mad dogs all chase the clod.' He further said: 'Do you understand?' The monk said: 'I do not understand.' The Master said: 'The lacquer tub is not sharp,' and then descended from the seat. One day a monk came to pay homage. The Master asked: 'Where have you come from?' The monk said: 'The Upādhyāya should know where I came from.' The Master said: 'A dung-carrier of Hunan, a rice-reaper of Jiangxi.' The monk said: 'The Upādhyāya is truly an eye of humans and devas. I served as head of the garden at Dahui and head of the canon repository at Donglin.' The Master gave him three blows with the stick and shouted him out. On the first day of the sixth month in the twenty-third year of Shaoxing, having bathed, he sat cross-legged and wrote a verse: 'Last night wind and thunder suddenly struck; / Two fingers grew out of the bare pillar. / At dawn, laughter reached the lantern; / The staff, as before, supports me. / The whisk leaped across the flowing sands, / Snatching back a single shoe from the barbarian monk.' Thereupon he passed away solemnly.
