Chan Master Daoyuan of Xiangshan in Mingzhou was a native of that prefecture. He ascended the hall and said, "The wine market and the fish stalls—every single one is a treasure realm. The cawing of crows and the chattering of magpies—each and every sound is a wondrous voice." He struck his staff and said, "Now tell me, what Buddhist affair is this? Quite a mess!" Ascending the hall, he said, "Xiangshan has a topic that fills the four great divine continents. If you judge it with the Buddha Dharma, it is still like mistaking a horse for an ox. Since all of you do not judge it with the Buddha Dharma, after all, what principle is it?" Striking his whisk, he said, "The keyless lock does not tire of being shaken; in the middle of the night, one must grope and touch the pillow." He then stepped down from his seat.
