Chan Master Weide of Xiangshan in Luling. A monk asked, "Mounting the lion seat, make the lion's roar." The master said, "Step back three paces." The monk said, "If you suddenly encounter Mañjuśrī coming, what then?" The master said, "Ranked downwind." He then said: "Sitting alone in a thatched hermitage, / Subhūti directly did not comprehend. / The heavenly dragons completely did not know / From where the rain of flowers fell. / Magadha fruitlessly shut its room; / Vaiśālī uselessly closed its mouth. / Waking from sleep, a cup of tea— / This is a different flavor entirely." He gave a shout. Ascending the hall, he said, "Difficult, difficult! Separated by a thread, it is still ten thousand layers of mountains. Easy, easy! In an instant one reaches the unproduced ground. How enviable are Mañjuśrī and Vimalakīrti, / The two of them endlessly discussing non-duality! This mountain monk is not like that." After a long pause, he said, "Difficult, difficult! Once discrimination is made clear, look for yourself." He gave a shout.
