Chan Master Qing of Zhiping at Caoyi Rock on Mount Nanyue. A monk asked, "What is the environment of Zhiping?" The master said, "In the stone chamber, the night is deep and the frosty moon is white; / In grass clothing, years have lengthened and the worn rushes are cold." The monk asked, "What is the person within the environment?" The master said, "Carrying a bamboo staff, seeking distant water; / Washing the bowl, hurrying for the morning meal." The monk said, "The person and the environment have already received the master's indication. What about the matter of the supreme school?" The master said, "The wooden horse neighs in the wind; the mud ox crosses the sea." He then said, "Not mind, not Buddha, not a thing; releasing the falcon that soars through the far sky. Do you still see it? The person waiting by the tree trunk beneath the clear breeze and the moon; the cold hare is gradually far off, and the spring grass is green." He gave a shout. Ascending the hall, he said, "Vague and vast all day long, what affair poses an obstacle? Now tell me, how is that affair?" After a long pause, he said, "Falling leaves know the flowing water; returning clouds recognize the old peak."
